Topping up Freon

How often does a Central Air Conditioner need to be charged with Refrigerant?

There is a misconception that Air conditioners use up/consume refrigerant over time. Statements such as “most units only need to be recharged once every two to five years” are based on systems that are not 100% sealed and leaking out.

Much the same as the air in a tire, if it leaks out, it will leak out again if the leak is not found and repaired. Also, a tire gets thinner as mileage is put on and becomes more prone to developing a leak.

Similarly, a refrigerant system over time wears thinner and can develop a leak. This usually happens when the outdoor unit (condenser) is dirty and working harder under higher pressures.

Strict Government regulations under Mopia (Manitoba Ozone Protection Association) clearly state that topping up is prohibited. A leak test and repair is required before adding any (Freon) refrigerant.

Annual service, particularly keeping the outdoor condenser clean will pay for itself by extending the life of a Central Air Conditioning system by many years.

Homeowners in Winnipeg have put their trust in Tradesman Heating and Air Conditioning for over 35 years.
